Jean Tirole wins the Nobel prize in economic sciences

This year's Nobel prize in economic sciences goes to Prof. Jean Tirole of Toulouse University in France for his microeconomic research investigating how large firms should be regulated in order to prevent consumers being damaged by their monopolistic behaviour.

Handbook of Game Theory, 1st Edition

The ability to understand and predict behavior in strategic situations, in which an individual’s success in making choices depends on the choices of others, has been the domain of game theory since the 1950s. Developing the theories at the heart of game theory has resulted in 8 Nobel Prizes and insights that researchers in many fields continue to develop. In Volume 4, top scholars synthesize and analyze mainstream scholarship on games and economic behavior, providing an updated account of developments in game theory since the 2002 publication of Volume 3, which only covers work through the mid 1990s.

Influencing the influencers: Marketing Strategies and Social Networks

Andrea Galeotti
The growth of the Internet and assorted technologies has made it possible to collect and process detailed information on social networks. Practical interest has centered on a number of questions: a. How can firms harness the power of social networks to promote their goals? ...

Sequential Voting and Agenda Manipulation

Salvador Barberà, Anke Geber
We provide characterizations of the set of outcomes that can be achieved by agenda manipulation for two prominent sequential voting procedures, the amendment and the successive procedure. Tournaments and super-majority voting with arbitrary quota q are special cases of the general sequential voting games we consider. We show that when using the same quota, both procedures are non-manipulable on the same set of preference profiles, and that the size of this set is maximized under simple majority…

On Doping And Recovery

Sebastian Bervoets, Bruno Decreuse, Mathieu Faure
This paper provides a game-theoretical analysis of the use by athletes of performance-enhancing drugs. We focus on a two-player game where players are heterogeneous and performances are subject to uncertainty. While the standard setup assumes these drugs increase maximum performances, we assume that they also increase the probability that a given athlete competes at his best possible level...

Whom are you talking with ? An experiment on credibility and communication structure

Gilles Grandjean, Marco Mantovani, Ana Mauleon and Vincent Vannetelbosch
The paper analyzes the role of the structure of communication - i.e. who is talking with whom - on the choice of messages, on their credibility and on actual play. We run an experiment in a three-player coordination game with Pareto ranked equilibria, where a pair of agents has a profitable joint deviation from the Pareto-dominant equilibrium. According to our analysis of credibility, the subjects should communicate and play the Pareto optimal equilibrium only when communication is public...

E-participation: Social Capital and the Internet

Fabio Sabatini, Francesco Sarracino
Studies in the social capital literature have documented two stylised facts: first, a decline in measures of social participation has occurred in many OECD countries. Second, and more recently, the success of social networking sites (SNSs) has resulted in a steep rise in online social participation. Our study adds to this body of research by conducting the first empirical assessment of how online networking affects two economically relevant aspects of social capital, i.e. trust and sociability…

Stability of networks under level-k farsightedness

P.J.J. Herings, A. Mauleon, V. Vannetelbosch
We provide a tractable concept that can be used to study the influence of the degree of farsightedness on network stability. A set of networks GK is a level-K farsightedly stable set if three conditions are satisfied. First, external deviations should be deterred. Second, from any network outside of GK there is a sequence of farsighted improving paths of length smaller than or equal to K leading to some network in GK. Third, there is no proper subset of GK satisfying the first two conditions…

Separating equilibrium in quasi-linear signaling games

Rudolf Müller, Dries Vermeulen
Using a network approach we provide a characterization of a separating equilibrium for standard signaling games where the senders payoff function is quasi-linear. Given a strategy of the sender, we construct a network where the node set and the length between two nodes are the set of the senders type and the difference of signaling costs, respectively. Construction of a separating equilibrium is then equivalent to constructing the length between two nodes in the network under the condition that the response of the receiver is a node potential…
